I was never the most graceful person, but when I tried out for the ice skating team at my school, I was determined to prove myself. I had been practicing for weeks, and I was feeling pretty confident. But when I stepped out onto the ice for my first tryout, I immediately felt like I was going to fall flat on my face.
The other skaters were all so much better than me. They glided across the ice with ease, while I stumbled and bobbled. I was so embarrassed that I wanted to quit right there and then. But then I remembered why I had started skating in the first place: I loved it. I loved the feeling of the ice beneath my skates, and I loved the challenge of learning new tricks.
So I took a deep breath and kept going. I fell down a lot, but I also managed to stay on my feet for a few seconds at a time. And by the end of the tryouts, I was actually starting to have fun.
I didn’t make the team, but I didn’t care. I had learned a valuable lesson: that it’s okay to make mistakes, as long as you keep trying. And I also learned that even if you’re not the most graceful person, you can still enjoy ice skating.
