Sarah closed her eyes, and she listened. She could hear the wind blowing through the trees, and she could hear the birds singing. She could also hear the boy’s heart beating.

“Do you hear it?” the boy asked.

“That’s the sound of my friend,” the boy said. “He’s calling for you.”

Sarah opened her eyes, and she looked at the boy. “I’m scared,” she said.

“Don’t be,” the boy said. “He won’t hurt you. He just wants to be your friend.”

Sarah took a deep breath. “Okay,” she said. “I’ll go with you.”

The boy smiled. “Good,” he said. “He’s been waiting for you.”

The boy stood up, and he helped Sarah to her feet. He took her hand, and they walked to the edge of the platform. The boy looked down at the ground, and he smiled. “Ready?” he asked.

Sarah nodded. “I’m ready,” she said.

The boy took a step off the platform, and he fell. Sarah screamed, and she closed her eyes. When she opened them again, she was standing in the middle of the clearing. The boy was gone, and the tree was gone. Sarah was alone.

Sarah ran back to the mall, and she told her parents what had happened. They didn’t believe her, of course. They thought she was just making up a story. But Sarah knew what she had seen. She knew that the boy was real, and she knew that he had taken her to the other side.
